Out of curiosity, where does the name Maple Glider come from?

At the time I wasn’t working on a particular music project, I was just writing songs and ended up with a collection of music that I wanted to turn into a project that was really fun, light and felt really good, so I wanted a name that reflected that. I love sugar gliders, I think they’re really cute – essentially I came up with the name when a friend and I were taking the piss by naming alternative sugars with the word glider. Between laughs, I said Maple Glider and we both just really liked it.

Tell me about your musical journey?

I think my desire to write was what originally got me interested in music. I remember writing my first ever song, Soar when I was 11 years old in a computer class. From there, I started writing more music – they originally started out as poems that I would just sing to myself. In high school I was in a band – I’m originally from Lismore in Northern NSW, so we use to play around the area. In 2015, I made the move to Melbourne and started an electronic duo with a friend under the name Seavera.

We released our first ever EP, which we recorded in a shed and then I decided to leave music for a bit to go travelling. I don’t know how to describe it, but every time I try to stop doing music, this little part of my soul kind of dies. So, I ended up moving to Brighton in England, bought a guitar and came back to it – just through writing again. In August 2019, I returned to Australia and reached out to Tom Ianesk, the guy that produced the album and asked him if he wanted to record some music with me. Originally, I thought it would be just a few songs, but while we were recording I just kept adding songs to the playlist and it organically became an album.
